Sport & Disease

We organised at the World Congress of Pharmacology, WCP 2014 (July, Cape Town) a symposium on human evolution – skeleton, muscle, metabolism, brain – and how this leads to modern diseases, and also what ultimate performance may be for humans.

Mankind’s evolution to run (together with spatial navigation, where the circuits involved comprise the brain GPS - Nobel prize 2013) 5-2 million years ago engendered major metabolic changes, which were then modified by epigenetic changes over the last 100,000 years when homo sapiens sapiens evolved to fill most of the environmental niches in the planet.
The new research areas listed in the philosophy page are key both to this evolution, and its consequences on health and drug discovery.
Personally MS knows/knew 9 Nobels and 10 Olympic finalists - their attributes have some remarkable similarities !
